About

Why this artist matters now

Josef Albers was a German-American painter and theorist whose systematic investigations of color interaction and visual perception fundamentally shaped postwar abstract practice. His nested square compositions, begun in the 1950s, demonstrated how identical hues appear to shift when placed in different chromatic contexts, establishing color as a relational rather than absolute property. A master teacher at Black Mountain College and Yale University, Albers developed a pedagogical approach grounded in direct material experimentation that influenced generations of artists and designers. His foundational text Interaction of Color remains central to color theory and art education.
