Lynette Yiadom-Boakye paints portraits of invented subjects and figures drawn from found objects, rendered in muted, restrained colour. A British painter and writer of Ghanaian heritage based in London, her practice has been instrumental in a contemporary reinvestigation of painting the Black figure. Her works are executed with a deliberate economy of tone that privileges the dignity and interiority of each imagined sitter over documentary likeness.
