James Casebere is an American photographer whose practice centers on elaborately constructed architectural scale models, photographed to produce large-format images that oscillate between the familiar and the uncanny. His staged interiors, often flooded with water or stripped of human presence, draw on institutional spaces such as prisons, asylums, and suburban domestic architecture to examine power, memory, and social control. The images operate convincingly as documentary photographs before their artifice becomes apparent, collapsing the boundary between the built environment and its representation.
