Robert Mangold draws by hand in graphite, tracing thick and thin lines across subtly modulated color planes to produce abstract works of architectural scale. Active since the mid-1960s, he works within a strict economy of means, limiting himself to shape, line, and color as compositional fundamentals. The tension between the hand-drawn line and the precisely conceived geometry of each panel gives his work a quality of sustained exactitude that resists the purely mechanical.
