Rudolf Stingel works across abstract and photorealist painting and large-scale installation, treating the conceptual foundations of painting itself as his primary subject. Since the 1980s, he has extended the practice beyond canvas into non-traditional materials including carpet, Celotex, and Styrofoam, often deploying these as participatory, room-scale surfaces that register the physical presence of viewers over time. His work has been the subject of major retrospectives at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
