About

Why this artist matters now

Ken Price made small, intensely colored ceramic sculptures whose biomorphic forms and immaculate surfaces defied the vessel tradition and the monumental scale typical of postwar American sculpture. Working in Los Angeles from the early 1960s, he applied layers of acrylic paint and automotive lacquer to hand-built clay, producing luminous, often unsettling objects that hover between geological specimen and bodily organ. A landmark 2012 retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art consolidated his position as one of the most singular figures in American ceramics.
