About

Why this artist matters now

Lynn Chadwick worked primarily in bronze and welded steel, producing semi-abstract figurative sculptures defined by angular, geometric forms and a sense of latent physical tension. His figures, often paired or grouped, balance architectural rigidity with an organic sense of weight and posture that resists easy categorisation as either purely abstract or representational. His work entered the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He was awarded the International Sculpture Prize at the 1956 Venice Biennale, cementing his position among the leading British sculptors of the postwar period.
