About

Why this artist matters now

Richard Learoyd makes large-scale photographic portraits, landscapes, and still lifes using a camera obscura, a centuries-old optical device he has adapted for contemporary practice. Working in Nelson, Lancashire, he produces single, unrepeatable images by projecting light directly onto photographic paper without a negative or digital intermediary, a process that yields photographs of exceptional tonal subtlety and materiality. His work has been shown at Pace Gallery and major international institutions. The method renders each photograph physically unique and temporally bound to its moment of exposure, challenging the reproductive logic of photography itself.
