Carlos Almaraz
Carlos Almaraz was an American painter and muralist working in acrylic and mixed media whose practice emerged from Chicano social movements of the 1970s and 1980s. His large-scale public murals and canvases combined figurative expressionism with bold color and geometric abstraction, addressing themes of labor, identity, and resistance. Based in Los Angeles, Almaraz co-founded the Chicano mural collective Los Four and exhibited widely within the Chicano art movement. His work synthesized postwar abstraction with direct engagement in community-based practice, rejecting the boundaries between fine art and public activism.
