Kassamali GulamhusseinWW-1950-114887

This message expresses gratitude for a comfortable home where dear guests and loved ones are welcomed. Kassamali Gulamhussein, whose hand-drawn and painted illustrations are featured on this kanga, came from a successful Zanzibar textile trading family originally from Gujarat, India. Peera brothers Hassanali and Kassamali Gulamhussein built a highly popular kanga production network throughout Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and Mombasa between 1928 and 1964. In 1929 they began printing kanga with the Japanese textile printer Daido-Senko (Daido Dying Factory, founded 1942). Today kanga designers create new layouts with digital illustration software.
