All the Sights of London by Underground: Western Area

Reginald P. GossopWW-1928-118814
1928·Color lithograph on cream wove paper·102 × 63 cm (40 3/16 × 24 13/16 in.)

This poster demonstrates why the Underground was anxious to promote travel to attractions like Kew Gardens or Hampton Court (the palace at the lower left edge of the poster). A destination far from the center of London meant a longer ride, and a longer ride meant a higher fare and more revenue.
Reginald Gossop excelled at creating imaginative maps that focused on London’s theater district, shopping destinations for the winter sales, or, as in this case, the city’s array of tourist attractions. He is best known as an agent for other artists but created a number of important designs himself, including the logo for the famous booksellers W. H. Smith.
