Graham Vivian Sutherland was an English painter whose abstract landscapes evolved from close observation of natural forms, particularly the terrain of Wales and Pembrokeshire. He developed a distinctive approach to portraiture that brought psychological intensity to his depictions of public figures, while also working extensively in printmaking, tapestry design, and stained glass. His practice spanned both abstraction and figuration, moving fluidly between intimate studies of rocks, roots, and thorns and monumental commissioned works.
